What is a Junk Car and How do I Sell One?
So, you’ve stumbled upon our website, but don’t quite know what a junk car even is–it happens! We’re here to explain the difference between a junk car and a used car and how to go about disposing of one.
What is the difference between a junk car and a used car?
At first, there doesn’t seem to be much difference — they’re both types of cars that aren’t new, obviously. And likely have been driven many miles, created lots of memories, and are an important part of your life. However, the difference between a used and junk car ultimately lands in the condition of the vehicle.
Used cars are very popular for buyers as they don’t have the mark up of a new vehicle, but are still in good condition. A used car can be driven, does not have an excessive amount of miles on it, and has at least a few years left in it. Also, you can buy a used car from a lot or a private seller.
Junk cars are a different ballgame. A junk car is usually not drivable at all — whether it has been in an accident, has sat in the backyard for too many years and has rusted away, or just bit the bullet one day and died, the car isn’t usable. You can’t buy a junk car from a dealer, and you can’t sell it to a dealer either! Maybe you can sell it to a private buyer through Craigslist, but people are likely looking for a car that runs, so that won’t work out.
When you have a junk car on your hands, your options may seem limited. It might not seem worth the effort to figure out what to do with it and it can just continue to rust away in your yard. But we are here to tell you that it is worth the effort! That car could be worth hundreds of dollars!
Hundreds of Dollars? But How Do I Sell a Junk Car?
Now that you know you’ve got a junk car on your hands, it is time to get rid of that ugly piece of metal in your backyard. Luckily, we are here to help! There are a few options when it comes to getting rid of your junk car and we’ll walk through them.
- Sell to a private buyer. Listing your car on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace is easy, but make sure to include photos of the exterior and interior of the car and describe all the limitations of the vehicle. This may take a long time, though, as buyers on these sites are likely looking for a working car. You may find people interested in the parts, though!
- Bring it to a junkyard. This option may seem like the best one to you, as where else would a “junk” car go. But we are here to tell you that a junkyard is not actually the place for a junk car. Junkyards will just crush the vehicles, and will also not pay you the full value of the car.
- Sell it to an auto salvager. Option 3 is, in our opinion, the best option. Sell your car to an auto salvager like us! At Junk Car Traders, we not only know how to repurpose your whole vehicle and resell the scrap and parts, we pass those profits on to you! Unlike junkyards, we sell the car parts on to others, and so we can offer you a better price. Depending on the popularity of your vehicle type and the amount of metal it has (the bigger the car, the better), you could be walking away with a few hundred dollars in cash!
